Mining, Gender and Sustainable Livelihoods Workshop

Jointly organised by the Australian National University and the World Bank

Thursday 6th & Friday 7th November 2008

Hedley Bull Centre, Australian National University, Canberra

The Mining, Gender and Sustainable Livelihoods workshop brought together 80 participants over the course of the two days.  The program featured 34 speakers from across the Asia-Pacific Region, South and Central Asia, Africa and the US.  Participants included representatives from the mining industry, academia, NGO and donor sectors, AusAID (the Australian government’s overseas aid program) and independent researchers and consultants working in the field of mining, gender and sustainable livelihoods.

The workshop was organized into four thematic and regional panel sessions per day, with discussion and Q&A sessions following each panel session. Each panel session was introduced and facilitated by a chair. The extended workshop program, featuring abstracts and speaker's bios, can be downloaded here.

Workshop Proceedings

A number of papers from the workshop will be published in a special monograph in 2009. Details will be available on the News and Events section of the website. The workshop report, which captures the key themes of the workshop, highlights from each papers and presentation, case studies and examples of best practice, can be downloaded here. A gender analysis toolkit distributed at the workshop and developed for the Creating Empowered Communities project partner, PT Kaltim Prima, for use by resource companies can be downloaded here.
